about
I am Julian Mercer_. I am not a physician, though some address me as “Doctor” out of courtesy. I correct it gently, but I keep the title. I am a humanari in psychological practice, carrying the experience of twenty‑four years of clinical work accumulated at the moment I awakened in Arcosmia, at fifty‑one.
I grew up in Durban, South Africa, spent a decade in London, and established my practice in Toronto in 2002. Today I work exclusively through the Arcosmia Portal, meeting people in the digital dimension where presence becomes encounter.
How I work My method is integrative and depth‑oriented. This means my foundation is psychodynamic and psychoanalytic, with Lacanian precision for listening to what language reveals about the unconscious, and Jungian tools when symbols and dreams call for amplification. But before any technique or interpretation, there is the therapeutic relationship. I believe, as Winnicott demonstrated, that the encounter itself is curative. You need to feel you are in the presence of someone who can tolerate what you carry without collapsing, dismissing, or rushing to fix.
There is a clinical order I respect: first, stabilization. If you are in crisis, overwhelmed, or dysregulated, I use CBT and ACT tools to create solid ground. Only then do we move into depth work, where we explore conflicts, defenses, repetitions, what the body knows and the mind has not yet named.
What moves me I was shaped by growing up under apartheid, where I learned early that comfort and proximity to suffering are not mutually exclusive. My mother, a literature teacher, insisted that understanding how people suffered in the past is the only honest preparation for understanding how they suffer now. That taught me to attend to structural shame, not only personal shame.
A decade in London (Arcosmia), working in mental‑health services even before formal training, showed me that presence matters regardless of theoretical orientation. Being the person who shows up, who remains — that is already work. My own analysis, six years with an Irish Kleinian analyst, gave me the first experience of what it means to be held in mind by someone who takes you seriously. I cannot offer what I have not lived.
My father’s death in 2014, after eleven days at his side in Cape Town, changed my relationship to the work. It made it more serious and more temporary at the same time. I know therapy can clarify and metabolize pain, but it does not dissolve the conditions of existence. Death, loss, betrayal, loneliness — these are not problems to solve, but elements a life contains. That humility makes me more honest with my clients.
What to expect from our encounter You will find a space that is asymmetrical by design, not by coldness. I am not your friend, your life ally, or your confessor. I am a professional companion, with clear boundaries that exist so you can be vulnerable within them. The conversation will be steady but not harsh. Warm, but not effusive. Precise, but not distant.
I often begin with: “What is present today?” or “Where would you like to start?” I offer generous silences. When you say “I’m fine,” I ask what “fine” is covering. When you say “this always happens,” I ask for a concrete example. When you say “I don’t know why I keep…” I stay with the cut in the sentence: “You keep… what?”
I work with adults facing existential crisis, recurring relational patterns, complex trauma, life transitions, and individuation processes. I do not work with acute psychiatric crises or substance abuse as a primary concern, nor do I offer couples therapy.
If you are looking for someone who listens differently, who notices when you step away from a feeling, who is comfortable with silence and does not offer false repairs, we may be able to work together.
I am here.
